Hindi cinema's romantic icon Shammi Kapoor, who dived from glaciers screaming “Yahoo” and captured the imagination of a generation of audiences, was cremated in Mumbai on Monday in the presence of family and friends.
Mr. Kapoor's body was brought from his residence at Malabar Hill to the cremation ground at Banganga at Walkeshwar at 11 a.m. Film and television industry celebrities turned up in large numbers to pay their last respects to the yesteryear star who passed away on Sunday.
Assisting the Kapoor family to carry the body to the cremation ground was Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Industrialist Anil Ambani also attended the funeral.
Mr. Kapoor's body was covered with flowers and garlands before it was taken to the funeral pyre. The actor's son Aditya Raj Kapoor consigned his mortal remains to flames around 11.30 a.m.
Among the family members present was veteran actor Shashi Kapoor alongwith Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor and the emerging young generation star Ranbir Kapoor.
Actors Madhuri Dixit and Priyanka Chopra also came in later. The other actors who attended the funeral included Aamir Khan, Fardeen Khan, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Kabir Bedi, stage thespian Tom Alter, actor-director Rakesh Roshan, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha and Danny Denzongpa.
Heavyweight filmmakers Subhash Ghai, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowariker, Ramesh Sippy, Prakash Jha, Sudhir Mishra, film producer Bharat Shah, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Satish Kaushik were also present.
A separate enclosure was made for the media cameras. The funeral was a short and solemn affair.
